Former Real Madrid attacking midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has strongly criticised Vinícius Júnior following the team’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash.
The Dutchman expressed frustration with Vinícius’ performance, particularly his on-field behaviour during the match against the Bundesliga side.
“It’s awful.
“Watching him play makes me angry. I feel very sorry for him because he is a brilliant player.
“But every time he touches the ball, even just a slight touch, he throws himself to the ground hoping the opponent gets a red card, then gets up as if nothing happened. That is what saddens me about him.”
Vinícius was largely ineffective during the encounter, failing to make a decisive impact as Bayern Munich secured the win.
Goals from Luis Díaz and Harry Kane ensured victory for the German side, leaving Real Madrid with work to do ahead of the return leg.
Van der Vaart’s remarks highlight ongoing debates around Vinícius’ playing style, despite widespread recognition of his talent and ability on the pitch.
