Abia Police Debunk Report of 488 Boko Haram Arrests

The Abia State Police Command has debunked a viral report claiming that 488 Boko Haram members were recently arrested in the state, describing the information as false and intended to mislead the public.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the command clarified that the video being circulated alongside the claim is not recent and does not reflect the current security situation in Abia State.

The statement, issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, explained that the footage is an old broadcast recorded more than 11 years ago.

According to the police, the report is being misrepresented in a way that could create fear and confusion among residents.

The command emphasised its commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state, assuring the public that there is no cause for alarm.

“As the lead internal security agency, the command assures residents of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities without apprehension.”

The police also called on residents to support ongoing security efforts by avoiding the spread of unverified information and relying on credible sources.

“The State Police wants the public to support its security efforts by rejecting fake news and relying only on credible and verified sources for information.”

The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, further warned that spreading false information could disrupt public peace and security.

He stated that individuals found guilty of circulating such misinformation could face arrest and prosecution under relevant laws, including the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime Act.

Residents were advised to remain vigilant, verify information before sharing, and cooperate with authorities to maintain peace and stability in the state.
