The Labour Party (LP) has officially rolled out its timetable and activity schedule for the 2026 primary elections, setting the stage for its participation in the 2027 general polls.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, who outlined key dates, costs, and procedures for aspirants across all elective positions.
According to the party, the framework for the primaries aligns with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2026, and the timetable earlier issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
One of the major highlights of the announcement is the cost attached to the presidential ticket. The party set the combined price for the expression of interest and nomination forms at N50 million.
“For the presidential race, aspirants are to pay N10 million for the expression of interest form and N40 million for the nomination form, bringing the total to N50 million.
“The party has, however, approved concessions for women, youths aged 25 to 30, and persons living with disabilities, who are only required to pay for the expression of interest forms across all categories.
“Please note that Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, will receive both his expression of interest and nomination forms free of charge, in recognition of his performance in office and contributions to the party’s image,” Asogwa stated.
The timetable indicates that the sale of nomination forms will begin on May 6 and close on May 16, while completed forms are expected to be submitted between May 17 and May 18.
Screening exercises for aspirants will follow shortly after, with House of Assembly and governorship hopefuls scheduled for May 20. National Assembly and presidential aspirants will undergo screening on May 22, while results are expected to be released on May 23.
The party also outlined a window for appeals and petitions, which will take place on May 24 for state-level positions and May 25 for National Assembly and presidential aspirants. The final list of cleared candidates is set to be published on May 26.
Primary elections for House of Assembly and governorship positions are scheduled for May 27, while those for National Assembly and presidential aspirants will be held on May 29.
In terms of fees, House of Assembly aspirants will pay N3 million, House of Representatives aspirants N5 million, Senate aspirants N10 million, and governorship aspirants N25 million.
