Workers’ Day: Labour Party Calls for Improved Workers’ Welfare

The Labour Party has called on government authorities to take stronger action in improving the welfare of Nigerian workers, as the country commemorates International Workers’ Day.

In a statement issued to mark the occasion, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, reiterated that the party’s foundation and guiding principles have consistently been aligned with the struggles and aspirations of workers since its registration in 2003.

“We use this opportunity to call on those in authority to intensify efforts toward improving the welfare of Nigerian workers,” a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, said.

The party acknowledged steps taken by the current administration to address economic challenges affecting workers, including the recent adjustment to the minimum wage. However, it stressed that such measures are not sufficient given the continued rise in inflation and the increasing cost of living.

The Labour Party also praised organised labour groups, particularly the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, along with their affiliate unions, for their dedication to defending workers’ rights and contributing to national development.

“We assure Nigerian workers that the Labour Party stands firmly with them and will never abandon the collective struggle for good governance – one that guarantees fair wages and aligns with the ideals and standards of the International Labour Organisation.

“As the nation looks ahead to the coming elections, we urge Nigerian workers to keep faith with the Labour Party for it is the party that genuinely reflects their values and aspirations. We remain confident in the eventual triumph of the people.”

The party maintained that sustained commitment to workers’ welfare and good governance remains essential to achieving a more equitable and prosperous society.
