The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has completed congresses across all 13 local government areas, 171 wards, and 2,975 polling units in Ebonyi State as part of efforts to strengthen its grassroots presence.
The exercise, held on Thursday, is expected to be finalised before the end of April, positioning the party ahead of upcoming elections.
Chairman of the state congress committee, Uche Onyeagucha, said the party would not rely on the traditional delegate system. Instead, candidates will emerge through consensus or direct primaries.
“We will not be using national delegates. Candidates will emerge either through consensus or direct primaries. We assure members of a transparent process,” he said.
He noted that the approach is aimed at promoting inclusiveness and strengthening internal democracy.
The committee’s secretary, Sunday Udedibia, also expressed confidence in the process, stating, “Our aim is to ensure that we deliver on the mandate given to us and move the party forward.”
State party chairman, Jennifer Adibe-Nwafor, described turnout across the state as impressive and urged members to remain committed.
She confirmed that the party had notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with security agencies monitoring the exercise, adding that primaries would take place between April 23 and April 30.
INEC liaison officer, Basil Imoke, also reported strong participation, saying, “The turnout was massive, and participation levels were high.”
Several officials emerged through consensus, including Oshim Ekuma in Ezza North, alongside Chika Igwe and Peace Nwafor in Okposi Ward, and Anayo Nwankwo in Ekka Ward.
Party members say the early congresses are part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
