The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has announced plans to form a united political front ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the aim of preventing the All Progressives Congress (APC) from taking control of the state government.
The position was made known on Thursday by Ikpegbu Emeka Yellow, chairman of the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the PDP in the state.
According to him, the move is necessary in response to what he described as growing efforts by APC leaders to capture political power in Abia. He alleged that the ruling party at the centre is working toward a broader agenda that could undermine multi-party democracy if left unchecked.
He called on political leaders across party lines in the state to set aside their differences and work together to protect democratic principles.
” We therefore call on all political leaders in Abia, irrespective of party affiliation to rise above partisan interests and unite in defense of our democracy”
Yellow further claimed that some former PDP members who defected to the APC are actively involved in efforts to destabilize the party in the state.
However, the allegations were strongly rejected by the All Progressives Congress in Abia. Responding, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, said the PDP faction lacks the credibility to advise the people of the state.
He argued that the APC continues to enjoy growing support among residents and accused the PDP leadership of working against its own party’s interests. Aguoru also alleged that members of the faction were attempting to align with the Labour Party-led administration in the state, similar to what he claimed happened during the 2023 elections.
