Abia Police Launch Violent Crime Response Unit

The Abia State Police Command has launched a newly created Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of broader efforts aimed at improving security operations, professionalism, and accountability within the state’s police structure.

The unit was formally inaugurated on Tuesday by the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, in the presence of members of the police management team.

According to the command, the establishment of the VCRU is in line with the reform-driven vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, which focuses on building a police force that is professional, effective, accountable, and respectful of human rights.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the command explained that officers selected for the specialised unit underwent a thorough screening and selection process before receiving intensive operational training.

She stated that the orientation programme was designed to equip personnel with the discipline, professionalism, and operational competence required to tackle violent crimes effectively across the state.

The newly inaugurated unit has been specifically tasked with responding swiftly to incidents involving violent crimes and carrying out detailed investigations with professionalism and precision.

To reinforce transparency and public confidence, the command also introduced an independent Civilian Oversight Board that will monitor the activities of the VCRU.

The board includes representatives from the Abia State Traditional Rulers Council, human rights organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, Amnesty International, and other stakeholders. Its primary responsibility will be to ensure that the unit operates within established professional standards while respecting the rights of suspects and members of the public.

The police command further disclosed that a fully equipped operational base has been established for the VCRU at Orji Uzor Kalu Bridge in Aba, while additional sub-units have also been positioned across different parts of the state to improve response time and operational coverage.

According to the statement, all operational and detention facilities connected to the unit have been designed to meet approved standards, with emphasis placed on protecting the dignity and rights of individuals in custody.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, CP Isa reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and coordinated crime-fighting efforts throughout Abia State.

He warned that misconduct, abuse of authority, and acts of impunity would not be tolerated under his leadership, stressing that accountability remains a major part of the command’s policing strategy.

The commissioner also appealed to residents to support security agencies by sharing timely and credible intelligence that could assist ongoing efforts to combat crime and maintain public safety.

He added that the command remains committed to proactive and intelligence-driven policing, stronger collaboration with communities, and the protection of lives and property across the state.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Civilian Oversight Board, Eze Linus Mba, praised the initiative and pledged the board’s commitment to ensuring transparency and effective oversight.

He assured that the board would work closely with the police while also serving as a bridge between law enforcement agencies and the public in order to strengthen trust and accountability.
