Abuja Building Collapse: Wike Orders Arrest, Land Seizure

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the arrest of a developer following the collapse of a two-storey building in Jikwoyi, Abuja.

GoNews had reported that Seven persons have been injured following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction in Jikwoyi.

He also directed that the land be seized and repurposed for public use, warning that those behind the illegal construction would face prosecution.

During a visit to the site, Wike revealed that the structure was built without approval from the FCT Department of Development Control, despite multiple stop-work notices.

“There was no approval for the construction of this building. Development Control had issued stop-work notices, but the company ignored the notices and continued regardless.

“Despite the lack of formal approval, the company proceeded with construction, leading to the eventual structural failure. It is important that we act decisively. Where there is a clear violation, the law must take its course,” he said.

He added that authorities would consult with residents to determine how the reclaimed land would be used for public benefit.

The minister stressed the importance of following building regulations and instructed agencies to intensify enforcement, including demolishing illegal structures.

The collapse left several workers injured. According to the FCT Emergency Management Department, 17 workers were on the upper floor when the building gave way. Five were injured, while another worker trapped at ground level was later rescued.

Emergency teams responded swiftly, with officials confirming that no victims were left trapped beneath the debris.
