ADC Warns Nigeria Democracy at Risk, Calls for INEC Chairman Removal

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged the Federal Government to guarantee a level playing field for opposition parties, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is under growing pressure.

Speaking in Ibadan on Tuesday, Oyo State governorship aspirant Niyi Aborisade said recent developments suggest the country’s political space is becoming increasingly restrictive.

He also called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), raising concerns about the commission’s neutrality.

“A democracy without opposition is not a democracy; it is a gradual descent into authoritarianism,” he said.

Aborisade alleged ongoing efforts to weaken opposition parties nationwide, pointing to internal issues within the ADC, including the reported delisting of some party leaders.

“This is not just about the ADC; it is about the future of democracy in Nigeria,” he added.

He warned that treating opposition politics as a threat could erode accountability and deny citizens meaningful political choices.

“When opposition voices are silenced, the people lose their power to choose, question and demand accountability,” Aborisade said.

Despite the concerns, he maintained that the ADC remains committed to lawful political participation and has complied with INEC requirements regarding its activities.

He also called on the government to focus on pressing national challenges such as insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and the rising cost of living.

“Suppressing opposition will not solve insecurity. Silencing dissent will not create jobs. What Nigeria needs is inclusive governance,” he said.

Aborisade dismissed reports of division within the ADC in Oyo State, affirming that the party remains united under the leadership of Yinka Olona.
