VAR Under Fire as EPL Fans Demand Its Removal

More than 75% of fans in the Premier League want the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system scrapped, according to a new survey by the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA).

The poll, which gathered responses from about 8,000 supporters, shows growing frustration with VAR despite claims that it improves refereeing accuracy.

A majority of respondents 76% said they do not support the system, while over 70% believe it has not made decisions more accurate.

Fan dissatisfaction also extends to the overall experience, with 97% saying VAR has reduced their enjoyment of football and more than 90% claiming it has negatively affected matchday atmosphere.

FSA representative Thomas Concannon said delays, questionable decisions, and reduced excitement are key reasons behind the backlash.

Introduced seven years ago, VAR has faced ongoing criticism, particularly from stadium-goers who often struggle to understand decisions during stoppages.

The survey also found that 94% of fans feel VAR has not improved the TV viewing experience either.

Despite the criticism, the Premier League maintains that most fans support VAR, provided improvements are made. The system is also likely to remain in place, as 19 out of 20 clubs voted to keep it in 2024.

For VAR to be removed, at least 14 clubs would need to agree.

Looking ahead, VAR’s role could expand further, with plans to include more decisions such as corners and second yellow cards at the next FIFA World Cup.
