The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its last representative in the Sokoto State House of Assembly following the defection of Abdullahi Randa to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Randa, who represents Tureta Constituency, officially announced his defection through a letter that was read on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary session by the Speaker, Tukur Bala.
Speaking after the announcement, the lawmaker explained that his decision was influenced by the prolonged leadership crisis within the PDP. According to him, the internal disputes have significantly weakened the party’s ability to operate as an effective opposition platform.
“The lingering disputes have weakened the party’s capacity to function as a credible opposition. I took this decision after careful consideration, as the situation has made the platform no longer viable,” he told journalists.
Randa’s exit comes amid a broader wave of defections from the PDP within the Sokoto State legislature. Just days earlier, on April 7, seven lawmakers left the party to join the ADC, while another defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Those who had earlier moved to the ADC include Abubakar Magaji, Habibu Modachi, Buhari Haliru, Bashar Jabo, Nasiru Adamu, Awaisu Aliyu, and Atiku Liman. Meanwhile, Muhammad Mas’ud, representing Shagari Constituency, defected to the APC.
With Randa’s defection, the PDP now has no representation in the Sokoto State House of Assembly. The current composition of the House stands at 22 members of the APC and eight members of the ADC, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
