APC Kwara North Rejects Zoning for 2027 Governorship

The All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus in Kwara North has pushed back against growing demands to zone the state’s governorship position to the region.

Instead, the group insists that the selection of the next governor of Kwara State should be driven by merit—highlighting competence, independence, credibility, and proven ability as essential criteria.

At a meeting held Wednesday in Ilorin, the caucus also reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition. It further endorsed Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa (popularly known as BOB) as its preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship race.

Speaking for stakeholders from Edu, Patigi, Moro, Kiama, and Baruten LGAs, caucus leader Malam Lukman Sabi-Musa emphasized Bolarinwa’s role in the historic “O to Ge” movement and his governance experience.

While acknowledging the desire for Kwara North to produce the next governor, the group warned against prioritizing regional sentiment over capability.

“The ultimate objective of governance is not merely to produce a governor based on origin, but to ensure purposeful leadership that will uplift our region and the entire state,” Malam Sabi-Musa said.

The caucus also distanced itself from what it described as “recent press statements and hastily-organised rallies” advocating zoning, rejecting any claims that such actions represent the region.

“We categorically reject these actions and dissociate ourselves from such representations,” he said.

Sabi-Musa further alleged that the push for zoning is being driven by individuals seeking political advantage, with claims that some traditional and religious leaders were pressured into attending rallies.

“It is deeply concerning to contemplate leadership that may be constrained or lack the independence required to deliver impactful governance,” he added.

The group concluded that despite years of representation, parts of Kwara North still lag in development—reinforcing the need for capable leadership.

“The focus must remain on competence and capacity, qualities that not only win elections but also guarantee inclusive governance and equitable development,” he said.

Describing its members as “resolute, informed and committed,” the caucus said it remains focused on ensuring equitable distribution of democratic dividends across the state.
