The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have renewed calls for greater youth involvement in Nigeria’s democratic process.
This message took center stage at a civic engagement programme in Abuja focused on boosting participation in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
The initiative, spearheaded by serving NYSC member Magaji Ndagi, was held on April 15, 2026, at Merit House in Maitama. It brought together electoral officials, government representatives, corps members, and secondary school students from across the FCT.
Opening the event, National Commissioner and IVEC Chairman, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, praised the project as a strong example of youth-led civic responsibility.
“I first met the corps member a few months ago when he came to my office to share his idea on mobilising young people for participation in the CVR exercise. He struck me as a serious young man full of initiative,” he said.
Haruna stressed that a reliable voter register is key to credible elections, revealing that over 3.7 million Nigerians had registered as of April 2026, with youths making up more than 68 percent.
“Clearly, Nigeria’s youths dominate the country’s demography. Therefore, for our democracy to have any meaningful impact, it is necessary to engage with them by every reasonable means possible,” he stated.
He also highlighted the enduring collaboration between INEC and NYSC, noting the vital role corps members have played in elections since 2011.
Representing the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General O. O Nafiu, Mrs Anyaogu Maureen commended the initiative and encouraged young Nigerians to take part in the CVR exercise.
“Votes do count, and exercising your civic right is taking charge of the future of this country,” she stated.
Also speaking, Dr. Obinna Ebirim, representing the Minister of Youth Development, described the programme as timely.
“Democracy does not thrive on silence. It flourishes when citizens actively participate in shaping the leadership and direction of their country,” he said.
He added: “Your vote is your voice. Your registration is your right. Your participation is your power.”
INEC Secretary, Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, represented by Mrs Dorothy Bello, emphasized the importance of inclusive participation, warning that youth disengagement poses a risk to democracy.
“The youth demographic plays a crucial role in the electoral process. However, many remain unregistered or disengaged. This is not just a missed opportunity but a risk to our democracy,” she said.
In his remarks, convener Magaji Ndagi described the initiative as a push for young Nigerians to take responsibility for their future through active civic engagement.
“Continuous Voter Registration is more than just a process of getting a voter’s card. It is about giving yourself a voice and taking responsibility for the leadership and direction of our country,” he said.
The event also featured the unveiling of a magazine aimed at promoting voter awareness, alongside lectures and interactive sessions on the CVR process.
