The Kwankwasiyya Movement has reacted to the recent judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria concerning the leadership dispute within the African Democratic Congress, stating that it is taking a cautious approach by thoroughly examining the ruling.
In a press statement issued on Friday and signed by its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, the movement praised the Supreme Court for demonstrating what it described as courage and clarity in its handling of the case.
According to the group, the judgment— which set aside earlier rulings that had caused confusion—represents a victory for due process and reinforces the judiciary’s critical role in stabilising democratic governance.
According to the statement, “by correcting the procedural irregularities that led to the artificial suspension of party leadership, the court has restored order and reaffirmed that institutions must operate within the bounds of the law.”
While acknowledging that the substantive case has been returned to the trial court, the movement expressed confidence that the Supreme Court’s decision has established a solid foundation for fairness and justice as proceedings continue.
“At this critical juncture, we are carefully studying the judgment and rigorously analysing its implications, particularly in light of the limited time within the electoral cycle,” the statement said.
It added, “this is necessary to ensure that we do not inadvertently fall into any political or legal trap that could undermine or prevent our principal and other key actors within the opposition from effectively participating in the 2027 general elections.”
The movement further disclosed that it is exploring a range of lawful and strategic options aimed at navigating the evolving political landscape and overcoming potential obstacles.
“We are actively exploring all lawful and strategic options available to neutralise any such obstacles,” it stated.
As part of these efforts, the group indicated it may engage with other political platforms, including the National Democratic Congress and the People’s Redemption Party, as it considers possible alliances.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement reiterated that its primary objective is to safeguard democratic participation and ensure that Nigerians are not excluded from the political process.
“Our objective remains clear: to safeguard our political rights, protect democratic participation, and ensure that no contrived circumstances are allowed to silence the voice of the people,” the statement added.
It also assured its supporters that clarity on its political direction will be provided soon.
“In no distant time, an official position of our leader regarding a new political alignment will be communicated.”
Emphasising the broader importance of democratic resilience, the movement highlighted the need for strong institutions and active citizen engagement.
“Nigeria’s democracy must be protected not only by the strength of its institutions but by the courage of its people to stand firm in the face of uncertainty,” it said.
The group concluded by urging its members and supporters to remain calm and focused as consultations continue, reaffirming its commitment to unity, stability, and the democratic process.
