Taraba Faces Shortage of Science Teachers, Commissioner Warns

The Taraba State Commissioner for Basic Education, Augustina Godwin, has sounded the alarm over a growing shortage of qualified science teachers in the state, particularly in key subjects such as physics and chemistry.

She warned that the situation could have serious long-term consequences for the development of essential sectors that rely on skilled professionals.

Godwin made this known during a Science, Technology, Mathematics and Agriculture (STEMA) training programme held in Jalingo, which brought together senior secondary school teachers from across the North-East region.

According to her, the limited number of science educators is already posing a significant challenge to the state’s education system and could ultimately affect its capacity to produce professionals such as doctors, engineers, and other specialists.

“This trend is inimical to the development of the state and could affect our capacity to produce skilled professionals in the near future,” she said.

To address the issue, the commissioner outlined plans to strengthen the Guidance and Counselling Department, with a focus on encouraging students to develop interest in science subjects and related careers.

She also revealed that her ministry would collaborate with the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools to design strategies aimed at boosting student participation in science and technology disciplines.

The training programme was organised by the Office of the Vice President in partnership with the North-East Development Commission. Godwin commended the initiative, describing continuous teacher training as vital for improving teaching quality, strengthening STEMA education, and enhancing learning outcomes.

Speaking at the event, Mariam Masha said the programme targets teachers from Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Taraba States.

She added that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Tinubu and is designed to close educational gaps while equipping teachers with modern digital and technical skills.

“The programme enhances teachers’ capacity to integrate technology into teaching methods to boost education outcomes in the region,” she said.
