Youths in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State have petitioned the management of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over the worsening electricity supply in the area.
Under the aegis of the Sagamu Youth Association (SYA), the group expressed concern about the persistent poor power supply and its damaging effect on economic activities in the town.
In a letter addressed to the managing director of IBEDC on Wednesday, the youths voiced frustration over what they described as inadequate load allocation and the impact it continues to have on businesses and residents.
The letter, signed by the chairman of the committee on electrical issues, Comrade Bashiru Adewale, stated that the current “B and E” classification of the 11KVA feeder serving most parts of the town is no longer sustainable.
According to the group, residents and business owners receive only minimal electricity daily, a situation they said has severely affected small and medium-scale enterprises and disrupted the academic activities of students in the community.
They also appealed for a temporary upgrade of the 11KVA feeder from Band E to Band C, noting that such a move would increase the guaranteed hours of electricity supply and provide relief for artisans and business owners who depend on costly alternative power sources.
Parts of the letter read, “Over time, residents and business owners have continued to experience inadequate power supply, particularly under the present Band E classification of the 11KVA feeder serving major parts of the town.
“This has significantly affected economic activities, small and medium-scale enterprises, students, artisans, and the general well-being of our people.
“In view of the above, we respectfully request that IBEDC consider upgrading the 11KVA feeder from Band E to Band C on a tentative basis while necessary technical work and transformer upgrades are being carried out. We believe this interim measure will provide some relief to residents and help stabilize socio-economic activities within Sagamu.
“Furthermore, the Sagamu Youths wish to formally invite IBEDC officials to a Townhall Meeting with stakeholders and electricity consumers in Sagamu. The purpose of this engagement is to foster open dialogue, address customers’ concerns, clarify operational challenges, and collectively explore sustainable solutions.”
The youths assured the company of adequate security and proper coordination during the proposed meeting, expressing optimism that continued collaboration and proactive engagement would help strengthen the relationship between IBEDC and the Sagamu community.
