FRSC Urges Motorists to Drive Safely in Rainy Season

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a nationwide advisory urging motorists to adopt safer driving habits as the rainy season sets in, citing increased risks associated with wet road conditions and reduced visibility.

In a statement released on Monday, the agency emphasized that speeding on slippery roads remains one of the leading causes of accidents during this period. It called on drivers to be more cautious, maintain appropriate speed limits, and observe safe distances between vehicles to prevent collisions.

The FRSC also stressed the importance of vehicle maintenance, advising motorists to ensure their cars are in good working condition before setting out on any journey. This includes checking brakes, tyres, and lighting systems to handle challenging weather conditions effectively.

Speaking on the issue, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, highlighted the dangers that typically accompany rainfall.

According to him, “rainfall often leads to reduced visibility, worn out road markings, and waterlogged sections, all of which can pose serious dangers to motorists if not properly managed”.

The agency further advised drivers to avoid sudden braking, which can lead to skidding, and to use headlights appropriately to improve visibility for themselves and other road users. Staying focused and avoiding distractions while driving was also emphasised as a key safety measure.

Reaffirming its commitment to road safety, the FRSC noted that patrol teams have been deployed across the country to monitor compliance with traffic regulations and provide quick responses to emergencies.

The Corps Marshal also appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and adhere strictly to safety guidelines, stressing that patience and caution are essential to preventing accidents during the rainy season.
