Abia NUJ Urges FRSC to Tackle Rising Road Accidents

The Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed growing concern over the rising number of road accidents recorded across Umuahia, Aba, and key highways within the state.

The concerns were outlined in a communiqué issued following the council’s monthly congress held in Umuahia. In the document, the union called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), alongside other relevant agencies, to intensify their operations and enforce stricter compliance with road safety regulations.

The journalists specifically highlighted overspeeding and other dangerous driving behaviours as major contributors to the growing number of accidents. They urged authorities to take decisive steps to curb these practices and improve overall road safety.

In addition, the NUJ appealed directly to motorists, encouraging them to take responsibility by adhering strictly to traffic rules and paying close attention to road signs, which are designed to ensure safety for all road users.

Beyond road safety, the council also raised alarm over what it described as an increase in criminal activities in Umuahia, Aba, and other parts of the state. It called on the state government and security agencies to adopt proactive measures to prevent crime rather than reacting after incidents occur.

The union further encouraged residents to play an active role in maintaining security by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious movements or activities to the appropriate authorities.

The communiqué was jointly signed by the Abia NUJ Chairman, Chidi Asonye, and the Secretary, Ikechukwu Onuegbu.

Reaffirming its role in society, the NUJ stated its continued commitment to acting as a watchdog, ensuring accountability while promoting public awareness on issues affecting the state.
