Fifteen pupils abducted from an unregistered school and orphanage facility in Zariagi, Kogi State, have been rescued, according to the state government.

The disclosure came in a statement issued in Lokoja by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo. He confirmed that efforts are still underway to secure the release of the remaining victims, including the wife of the school’s proprietor.

“The facility, Dahallukitab Group of School, operated illegally in a remote, bushy location along the Kabba Junction axis without registration or notification to authorities.”

The incident occurred late on April 26, when armed attackers invaded the premises and abducted 23 pupils along with the proprietor’s wife.

Fanwo praised the response, highlighting the “gallantry and professionalism” displayed by the security teams.

Authorities also warned against operating unregistered institutions in isolated areas, describing them as “serious security risks” under current conditions.

“The operation of such facilities outside regulatory oversight not only undermines safety standards but also exposes innocent children to avoidable dangers,” Fanwo said.

He urged compliance with regulatory standards and engagement with authorities for proper safety measures, while reaffirming the government’s “uncompromising commitment to the protection of lives and property”.

Security operations, he added, remain ongoing to fully resolve the situation.
