Kogi Police Arrest Three Over Teacher’s Death

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the death of Mariam Usman, a teacher at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area.

The command said the arrests followed an extensive investigation by detectives attached to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lokoja after the case was reported on June 25, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Oyiza Afusat, investigators traced the incident to a series of alleged assaults reportedly linked to disciplinary measures the teacher had taken against an 11-year-old pupil.

“The Kogi State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in the investigation of a culpable homicide case reported on June 25, 2026, following the death of one Mariam Usman, a staff member of Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area.

“Upon receipt of the complaint, detectives of the Homicide Section, State Criminal Investigation Department, Lokoja, swung into action, conducting a comprehensive investigation that culminated in the arrest of three suspects in connection with the case.

“Investigation established that on June 17, 2026, one Abdullahi Isiaka assaulted the deceased at her residence over the disciplinary action she took against his 11-year-old son during school hours.

“Later that same day, while the deceased was on her way to the mosque for prayers, she was again assaulted by Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo.

“Further investigation revealed that on June 18, 2026, Ojonojima Mary, younger sister of Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where she assaulted the deceased at her workplace.

“Following the attacks, the victim was initially treated at Grace Clinic, Ugbamaka, before she was referred to Eleojo Clinic, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, succumbed to the injuries on June 25, 2026.”

The police identified the suspects as Ojonojima Mary, Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo and Abdullahi Isiaka, adding that investigators established a prima facie case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide against them.

“Consequently, the investigation has been concluded, and the suspects will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution,” she said.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Kankarofi, praised the efforts of detectives involved in the investigation, commending their professionalism and dedication in handling the case.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice and urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands. He also encouraged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid crime prevention and law enforcement.
