Two Nurses Arrested in Kebbi Over Wrong Injection Deaths

Two nurses have been arrested following the tragic death of two young sisters at the General Hospital in Zuru, Kebbi State.

The victims, aged six and three, reportedly died on March 18 after being administered wrong injections during treatment.

The suspects are currently in police custody in Birnin Kebbi, as investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the deaths.

In response to the incident, the Kebbi State Government has set up a nine-member panel of inquiry, chaired by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed.

The panel has already commenced hearings in Zuru, questioning key medical personnel, including the Principal Medical Officer, Dr. Thomas Gode, and Medical Officer, Dr. Mohammed Fakai, as well as nurses who were on duty at the time.

Family members of the victims, including their father, Ibrahim Abdullahi Shuni, also gave their accounts during the proceedings.

During the hearings, hospital staff pointed to lapses in communication among personnel as a possible factor that contributed to the incident, highlighting the need for urgent reforms in the system.

Meanwhile, the state government has donated N10 million to the bereaved family as support.

Speaking at the Emir’s Palace in Zuru, Ahmed said the gesture was meant to help the family cope with the emotional pain of their loss.

“No sum of money can replace the lives lost, but we hope this support shows that the family has not been abandoned,” he said.

The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi Mikailu Sami, also urged the family to remain strong and accept the situation as part of God’s will, while calling on healthcare workers to uphold professional standards.

“Negligence that risks human lives is unacceptable. Continuous training is essential for all health personnel,” he said.

On behalf of the family, Barrister Garba Shehu expressed appreciation to the state government for its intervention and commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation.
