Several soldiers have reportedly been killed after armed gunmen ambushed security operatives in Giro Masa community of Shanga Local Government Area, Kebbi State.
According to Channels Television, the troops were on their way to respond to reports of suspicious armed men at a construction site when they were attacked.
The gunmen, said to have been active in the area for some time, were reportedly traced to a construction company yard. Acting on intelligence provided by residents, security forces moved in to secure the location but were ambushed before reaching their destination.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, may have claimed the lives of an unspecified number of soldiers, along with two civilians.
During the confrontation, some military trucks were reportedly set ablaze.
As of the time of this report, military authorities have not issued an official statement on the incident.
However, Governor Nasir Idris has confirmed that the deadly attack took place on Tuesday night.
