Fresh violence in Jos South Local Government Area has claimed the lives of three people and left one injured, further heightening concerns over insecurity in the region.
The victims, Luka Sandu Pam (36), Samuel Davou (38), and Deme Saidu (35) were attacked on Friday evening in Nyamgo Gyel while returning from Gero on a motorbike.
The incident, which occurred on Good Friday, has thrown the community into mourning.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were among a group of about 15 youths heading home from a mining site when they were ambushed by gunmen. The sudden attack caused panic, forcing members of the group to scatter.
According to the Gyel Youth Leader, Dung Davou, the assailants opened fire without warning.
“We started hearing sporadic gunshots, and everyone scattered. Unfortunately, three of our people were killed,” he said, urging authorities to take urgent action against what he described as repeated attacks.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Berom Youth Moulder Association, Solomon Dalyop, described the incident as a troubling sign of worsening insecurity in Plateau State.
“These young men went to mark Good Friday and were returning home when they were ambushed and killed. This is heartbreaking,” Dalyop said.
He revealed that community leaders had earlier raised concerns during a security meeting about suspicious movements in nearby areas, warning residents to remain vigilant.
“We were informed about suspicious movements in these areas, and we have since cautioned our people to be vigilant, especially at night,” he added.
Dalyop further warned of escalating threats if decisive action is not taken.
“If nothing serious is done, this may just be the beginning of more terror. Terrorists are taking over our bushes,” he said.
He noted that only the police responded after the attack, taking the injured victim to hospital.
Residents have since called for stronger security presence in the area, as fears grow over continued attacks.
Efforts to get an official response from the police spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
