Omah Lay Explains Why He Unfollowed Afrobeats Big 3

Afrobeats star Omah Lay has said the Nigerian music industry is sharply divided, with artists and fans aligning either with Davido or Wizkid.

Speaking in a recent interview with The Fader, the singer described the Afrobeats scene as fragmented along loyalty lines.

“The whole Nigerian Afrobeats scene is very separated. It’s like if you’re with Davido, you’re on one side; if you’re with Wizkid, you’re on the other.

“Back in 2024, I actually unfollowed Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido. I felt like they started something with Afrobeats that we needed, but it was an old pattern,” he stated.

Omah Lay said he distanced himself from the so-called Afrobeats “Big 3”—Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido—because he was uncomfortable with how they were shaping the industry at the time.

He also spoke about his relationship with Davido, saying their collaboration on With You came together smoothly and changed his perception of the artist.

According to him, Davido’s personality left a strong impression, adding that the singer’s background often fuels criticism against him.
