NERC Orders TCN to Cut Transmission Losses to 6.5%

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria to cut transmission losses on the national grid to a maximum of 6.5 percent by December 2026.

The directive, contained in Order No. NERC/2026/026, is part of efforts to boost efficiency and improve stability within Nigeria’s electricity sector.

According to data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator, transmission losses have already declined from 8.71 percent in 2024 to 7.24 percent in 2025. Despite this improvement, the regulator noted that the figure still exceeds the 7 percent benchmark set under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO).

The new order, which takes effect from April 13, 2026, introduces stricter monitoring and reporting measures, including the installation of smart meters at key transmission points nationwide.

TCN has also been instructed to submit a detailed action plan by July 2026 outlining steps to meet the new target.

NERC said the initiative is designed to strengthen accountability and enhance overall grid performance across the country.
