Abia Takes Control of Power Sector as NERC Steps Aside

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially stepped aside from regulating the electricity market in Abia State, with responsibilities now transferred to the Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority.

In a major shift, the state government, through ASERA, has issued interim licences for power distribution and generation to three local companies.

ASERA Chairman Emeka Onyegbule said the move marks the beginning of stronger consumer protection and dispute resolution in the state, warning licensees to operate transparently.

The Executive Director for Legal and Regulation, Iguwo Ukwu, stressed that billing, metering, and customer engagement must follow approved standards.

” You must demonstrate consumer protection and responsiveness,” Ukwu said.

Representing the Commissioner for Power, Kachu Etolue urged the companies to deliver reliable electricity and maintain public trust.

The licences were issued to New Era Electricity Distribution, APL Electricity, and Geometric Power Aba.
