Electricity Consumers Get N155.84m Refund in 2025 – NERC

Electricity consumers across Nigeria received a cumulative refund of N155.84 million from distribution companies in 2025, following the resolution of billing-related complaints.

The figures are contained in the latest quarterly data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which was reviewed over the weekend.

The refunds were processed after electricity distribution companies addressed verified cases of overbilling and other billing disputes raised by customers.

According to the data, the refunds were disbursed in tranches throughout the year. Consumers received N32.21 million in the first quarter, N40.22 million in the second quarter, N32.66 million in the third quarter, and N50.75 million in the fourth quarter.

The report highlights billing disputes as the leading cause of customer complaints within the power sector, accounting for between 29 and 37 percent of all reported cases in 2025.

In the first quarter alone, the commission recorded 4,169 complaints, out of which 1,554 were successfully resolved. This translates to a resolution rate of 37.27 percent, reflecting ongoing challenges in addressing customer concerns efficiently.

“Customer complaints about billing constituted 37.37 percent of the total complaints received during the quarter, while metering issues accounted for 32.00 percent and service interruptions 13.65 percent, with these three categories cumulatively representing over 83 percent of all complaints,” the NERC report stated.
