UCL: Guardiola Sets Unwanted Record After Real Madrid Defeat

Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, unfortunately set an unwanted record on Wednesday following his team’s defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Guardiola watched as his side suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Federico Valverde was the hero of the match, scoring all three goals in Spain, giving the Spanish LaLiga giants a significant first-leg advantage heading into next week’s return fixture.

However, according to OptaJoe, this result marks Guardiola’s joint-heaviest defeat in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League knockout stage tie. This record is now shared with previous 3-0 losses to Barcelona in the 2014-15 semi-finals and Liverpool in the 2017-18 quarter-finals.

Guardiola’s team will now shift their focus back to the Premier League, where they are scheduled to face West Ham United this coming weekend.
