Seven Arraigned for Assaulting LAWMA Officials in Lagos

Seven individuals have been brought before the Special Offences (Mobile) Court in Ikeja, Lagos, facing charges for allegedly assaulting enforcement officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) during an environmental monitoring operation.

The defendants, identified as Olamilekan Abdullahi (21), Akeem Olamilekan (24), Frank Tom (25), Sakiru Jamiu (20), Emmanuel Abiodun (41), Olarewanju Onyowale (35), and Taiwo Yusuf (30), were reportedly apprehended by LAWMA enforcement operatives on March 8, 2026.

Authorities stated that the suspects were arrested in the Moshalashi Jimoh area of Lagos Island during a routine operation aimed at curbing indiscriminate waste disposal in the locality.

The defendants are facing a five-count charge, which includes conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, unlawful dumping of refuse at an unapproved location, failure to engage the services of an authorized Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste operator, obstruction of enforcement officers in the course of their duties, and assault.

Following their arraignment, the court adjourned the case until April 24, 2026, for the commencement of the trial.

The court also granted bail to each defendant in the sum of ₦200,000, with a requirement of two sureties per defendant. One surety must be a recognized community leader, and the other a gainfully employed relative.

Pending the fulfillment of these bail conditions, the court ordered that the defendants be remanded in a correctional facility.

Meanwhile, LAWMA has reiterated that any attempt to obstruct or assault its enforcement personnel constitutes a serious violation of Lagos State environmental laws.

The agency issued a warning that individuals who interfere with environmental enforcement operations will face the full consequences of the law through appropriate legal processes.
