FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has underlined the importance of leadership within his squad as the club continues its pursuit of Champions League success.
The German tactician made the remarks on Tuesday, a week after Barcelona’s latest European campaign ended in disappointment, following a quarter-final exit to Atletico Madrid.
It marked a second consecutive season of falling short, after being eliminated in the semi-finals last year by Inter Milan.
Despite their European struggles, Barcelona have enjoyed strong domestic form. Flick guided the team to a domestic double last season, and they are currently on track to defend their La Liga title, holding a nine-point lead over Real Madrid with seven matches remaining.
However, the coach believes that success in Europe requires more than technical ability.
“It is not an excuse but in the business end of the campaign in March and April, it is very important to have all the players available,” he said during a press conference ahead of their league clash with Celta Vigo.
“Against Atletico, we were missing Frenkie (de Jong) and Raphinha.
“Last year, we had Inigo (Martinez), who was a great leader.
“We need these types of players, capable of providing leadership on the pitch, to speak up during matches, in the quarter-finals or semi-finals of the Champions League, and to show the way.”
Flick also acknowledged the youthful nature of his squad, many of whom progressed through the club’s academy system, noting that experience will come with time.
“I believe we can do it, we have a fantastic team for the years ahead, and one must make the right decisions, notably in the transfer market,” he said.
While he declined to give specifics on transfer targets or future plans, Flick hinted at his desire to continue with the club.
He also reiterated that this role would likely be his final managerial job, expressing hope that his contract would be extended.
Barcelona now turn their attention back to domestic competition, where they remain firmly in control, even as they continue to build toward future European success.
