The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed the death of a dispatch rider following a fatal road crash at Otedola Bridge, marking the second such incident within 24 hours along the busy Lagos corridor.
The accident occurred inward the Secretariat axis near the Ogudu Toll Gate and involved a heavy-duty Volvo truck and a dispatch motorcycle.
According to the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the impact of the collision resulted in the immediate death of the rider, raising fresh concerns about the safety of dispatch operators on major highways.
He explained that LASTMA officials on routine patrol responded swiftly, securing and cordoning off the accident scene to prevent further incidents, especially given the heavy traffic along the route.
The remains of the deceased were subsequently handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, while personnel from the Alausa Police Division provided security during the evacuation process.
Adebayo added that the affected vehicles—the articulated truck and the motorcycle—were quickly removed using a tow truck, allowing for the gradual restoration of traffic flow.
Despite the prompt response, the crash caused significant gridlock, with congestion extending towards the Berger axis. LASTMA officials worked to manage the situation and ease traffic within the shortest possible time.
He also conveyed the message of the agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and described the incident as deeply unfortunate.
Bakare-Oki emphasised the importance of vigilance and strict adherence to traffic regulations, particularly among drivers of articulated vehicles and dispatch riders.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to strengthen road safety awareness and reduce accidents across Lagos State.
