Peter Obi Meets Jonathan Ahead of 2027 Presidential Race

Peter Obi, a leading presidential aspirant for the 2027 elections and former candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, on Monday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan at his residence in Maitama, Abuja, as part of a series of high-level consultations.

The meeting, which lasted approximately two hours, brought together several prominent leaders from the South East.

Among those present were former Enugu State governor Okwesilize Nwodo, former Imo State governor Achike Udenwa, former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission Onyema Ugochukwu, as well as Senators Ben Obi and Victor Umeh.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Obi explained that the visit formed part of his broader engagement with former national leaders as he prepares for the 2027 presidential race.

He noted that his consultations are focused on seeking guidance and exchanging ideas, rather than securing immediate endorsements.

“We need to consult them, especially someone like him (Jonathan) who served the country very faithfully, focused, and did what is expected in a democracy. In this declining situation, you consult him,” he said.

Obi, who is currently seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress, emphasised that discussions with Jonathan were centred on national issues and democratic values.

“He wished that we had a free, fair, credible election.

“There can’t be a one-party system. He cannot support such a thing. Nobody can claim to be more of a democrat in this country than Jonathan,” Obi said.

He made it clear that the former president has not endorsed his ambition, noting that the purpose of the meeting was strictly consultative.

“We’re not talking about an endorsement yet. When I become a candidate, I’ll come back for endorsement. He wishes the country well. We are here to consult with him,” he added.
