PDP Crisis: Wike Faction Open to Reconciliation

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike has said it remains open to reconciliation, as efforts continue to resolve internal divisions ahead of future elections.

The group disclosed that it has made several attempts to engage the faction led by Taminu Turaki in peace talks aimed at rebuilding a united and stronger PDP. However, it said the Turaki faction has neither responded to the invitations nor provided reasons for its absence.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, the National Publicity Secretary of the Wike faction, Jungudo Mohammed, explained that the outreach is intended to end the lingering crisis and restore unity within the party.

He acknowledged that the PDP has been grappling with serious internal disagreements in recent times, which have resulted in the emergence of rival factions.

According to him, such divisions are unhealthy for the party, particularly at a time when political activities are intensifying across the country.

Mohammed noted that even before the Court of Appeal in Ibadan offered its advisory position on the matter, the Wike faction had already been making efforts to reconnect with the Turaki group.

He added that the court’s recent pronouncements, which reinforced earlier lower court rulings, have made it more urgent for the party to settle its differences.

He also stressed that time is running out, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the timetable for upcoming elections, while the new Electoral Act has introduced stricter requirements and deadlines for political parties and aspirants.

Given these constraints, he said the Wike faction cannot afford to wait indefinitely and is now focused on reorganising and preparing a clear platform for members interested in contesting future elections.

Despite this stance, Mohammed maintained that the door to reconciliation remains open, noting that meaningful dialogue can only happen if both sides are willing to engage.

He concluded by emphasising that unity is crucial for the PDP to stay competitive and relevant, but achieving it will require cooperation from all parties involved.
