Key opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, were present in Abuja on Tuesday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) held its National Convention.
The event, hosted at Rainbow Events Centre, attracted more than 3,000 delegates and major political stakeholders as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Other prominent attendees included Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, and the party’s National Chairman, David Mark.
With the theme “So the Nation May Work”, discussions at the convention centered on strengthening internal unity, reviewing leadership structures, and mapping out strategies for the next election cycle.
The gathering is also expected to produce a new National Working Committee (NWC) while resolving pending state congress matters.
Security around the venue was tight, with accreditation ongoing as delegates arrived from across the country.
Despite earlier challenges, such as reported denial of access to venues like Eagle Square and Moshood Abiola National Stadium, the convention proceeded as planned.
Party leaders alleged external interference in the venue selection process, a claim that has added to the political tension surrounding the event.
The convention also comes amid an internal leadership dispute, with factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe both laying claim to control of the party.
In response, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended formal recognition of either faction due to ongoing litigation.
The ADC was adopted as a coalition platform in July 2025, aimed at uniting opposition forces to challenge Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
