A faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has revealed plans to appeal the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court judgment that recognised Dr. Agbo Major as the party’s legitimate national chairman.
The faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, describing the ruling as a “miscarriage of justice” and “an assault on democracy”.
Johnson maintained that the FCT High Court overreached its authority by delivering a decision on a matter already pending before the Abia State High Court and the Court of Appeal in Owerri.
He said: “This act flies in the face of established legal hierarchy and the doctrine of stare decisis. A group of expelled members, acting on behalf of Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, approached the FCT High Court seeking a judicial review of a matter already under consideration by the appellate court.
“Their actions clearly disregard the rule of sub judice and appear aimed at destabilising a viable opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections.”
Johnson also faulted the court for allegedly overlooking procedural lapses, stating that the NNPP was not properly served with court documents.
He argued that this omission violates the principle of fair hearing and raises serious concerns about due process.
He further warned that the judgment could weaken both public and international confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary at a crucial stage in the country’s democratic development.
Reassuring party members and the public, Johnson said, “This is merely a temporary detour orchestrated by those who fear the people’s will. We are taking all necessary legal steps to appeal this miscarriage of justice.
“We are confident that the appellate court will correct this anomaly and uphold the rule of law. The attempt to hijack this party will fail Nigeria’s democracy is bigger than the desperation of a few.”
