The Kano State branch of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has denounced an assault on its members in the Ruwan Bago ward of Rogo Local Government Area.
The party stated that the violence occurred during a gathering held to welcome a prominent politician who was defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the NNPP.
The NNPP claimed that the attack was orchestrated by thugs associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued by Ibrahim Karaye, the party’s publicity secretary, the NNPP labeled the event as unacceptable and demanded a thorough inquiry.
“The party strongly condemns the attack on our members,” Karaye said. “We urge security agencies to carry out a full investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”
He reported that 11 NNPP members sustained injuries in the clash. Additionally, two vehicles were vandalized, including one belonging to the defecting politician, and several mobile phones were reportedly stolen.
Karaye called on law enforcement to implement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
He also cautioned the APC and its leadership against actions that might escalate political friction.
“Opposition is an important part of democracy and should not be suppressed through violence or attacks on political opponents,” he said.
