Kano Police Recover Stolen Cars, Arrest Three Suspects

The Kano State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against vehicle theft, recovering two stolen cars and a tricycle in separate operations across the state.

The command also arrested three suspects in connection with one of the cases, underscoring ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities through intelligence-led policing and community cooperation.

The development was disclosed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Kiyawa, who said the recovered items have been returned to their rightful owners.

According to him, the operations were driven by credible intelligence and support from residents, which played a key role in tracking the stolen property.

In one of the incidents, operatives attached to the Tarauni Area Command recovered a Pontiac Vibe in Darmanawa Quarters on May 3. The vehicle, valued at approximately N12 million, had been stolen earlier the same day from the owner’s residence.

“The owner was traced through the vehicle particulars. The vehicle was taken into safe custody and has since been released to him, while an investigation is ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects,” the statement said.

In a separate operation, police recovered a 2004 Toyota Corolla LE that had been stolen in Abuja on April 22 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Wuse Zone 2. The vehicle was later tracked to Darmanawa Layout in Kano.

“Operatives of the Special Intervention Squad acted swiftly on credible intelligence and recovered the vehicle. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspects already identified,” the statement added.

In another case, police intercepted a stolen CNG-powered tricycle and arrested three suspects—Umar Rabi’u, Yahaya Hannafi, and Amina Muhammad.

The tricycle had reportedly been taken after its rider was poisoned along Mararraban Jos in Kaduna State on May 1. The suspects were eventually apprehended along Ring Road in Kano on May 3.

Police said the suspects are currently assisting with ongoing investigations, while efforts continue to apprehend other accomplices involved in the crime.

Reacting to the operations, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended officers for their professionalism and swift response.

He also acknowledged the role of the public in providing timely information that aided the recoveries.

“The command will continue to dominate the public space and deny criminals freedom of action,” he said.

At a brief ceremony held at the police headquarters in Bompai, the owners of the recovered vehicles expressed appreciation to the police for their prompt intervention and professionalism.

The command, however, advised residents to take preventive measures by installing tracking devices in their vehicles, avoiding parking in isolated areas, and promptly reporting suspicious activities to security agencies.
