The Kano State Government has directed all political appointees with ambitions to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was contained in a circular issued on Tuesday and signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim.
According to the circular, any appointee who fails to comply with the instruction will be disqualified from seeking elective office in the upcoming elections.
The SSG explained that the move aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act (2026), stressing the importance of adhering to laws guiding the conduct of public officials.
The directive has been communicated to all ministries, departments, agencies, and parastatals across the state for immediate attention.
He emphasized the need for strict compliance, noting that the decision is based on Section 88 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which regulates the involvement of public office holders in partisan political activities.
The circular stated that the measure is intended to promote neutrality, accountability, and integrity within the public service, while also ensuring a fair and level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.
It further noted that, “political appointees who intend to contest in the forthcoming elections are required to resign or retire, as applicable, on or before Tuesday, 31st March, 2026.”
All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies have also been instructed to widely circulate the directive and ensure full compliance.
