Nigerian singer Chike has opened up about the relationship advice he received from his mother, revealing that she placed strong emphasis on choosing a partner who brings value into one’s life, regardless of emotional attachment.
In a recent appearance on Ada’s Room podcast, the 33-year-old shared that his mother cautioned him against marrying into financial instability or committing to someone without a means of livelihood.
“I think everybody should look for a partner that has value. Personally, my mum advised me never to settle down with a woman who doesn’t have a source of livelihood regardless of love,” he said.
He explained that, from his mother’s perspective, marrying from a struggling background or into a family with heavy financial dependence could create long-term pressure.
The singer added, “She also told me never to marry someone with the baggage of family responsibilities, especially a firstborn that is not productive.”
Chike further noted that he takes this advice seriously, often asking questions to understand a potential partner’s background and level of productivity before pursuing a relationship.
He also advised men to look beyond physical attraction and consider deeper factors when entering relationships, particularly those that could lead to marriage.
