The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has voiced strong criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s recent comment that “the game is sweet only when you are winning,” asserting that the remark reveals a troubling detachment from the harsh realities faced by Nigerians.
Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, responded to a video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday night. The video showed the President making the aforementioned statement during an interfaith breaking of fast event.
In his reaction, Bolaji took to his X handle, posing a critical question about who exactly was benefiting from what he termed a “so-called game.”
“It is important to ask the President: Who exactly is winning in this so-called game?” the ADC spokesman inquired.
He questioned whether Nigerians could genuinely be considered winners amidst the escalating insecurity and severe economic hardships plaguing the country.
He further pressed: “Are Nigerians winning when communities are attacked and citizens are killed?”
“Are Nigerians winning when graduates cannot find jobs?”
“Are Nigerians winning when families cannot afford food and basic necessities?”
“Are Nigerians winning when the brightest young people see their future only outside their own country?”
The party maintained that the profound struggles experienced by ordinary Nigerians clearly demonstrate that the current political climate cannot be trivialized as merely a game.
“If politics is a game to the President, the Nigerian people are the ones paying the price,” the statement declared.
It further emphasized that the nation requires serious leadership that fully comprehends the gravity and responsibility inherent in the office of the President.
“Nigeria does not need a gamer-in-chief. Nigeria needs a leader who understands the weight of the office he holds and the responsibility it carries,” the ADC spokesman concluded.
