2027: Labour Party Postpones Congresses, National Convention

The Labour Party has postponed its planned congresses and national convention, which were earlier set to begin on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

Under the initial schedule, ward congresses were to kick off on March 26, followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, and the national convention on April 11.

However, after a joint meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee and labour union representatives, the party decided to shift the timeline.

In a statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, media aide to the Interim National Chairman, the party explained that the delay is to allow more time for members and interested Nigerians to fully take part in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise.

As part of preparations for a smoother process, the party also set up a 45-member Congresses and Convention Committee. The committee is headed by Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives representing Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency.

Other members include Salisu N. Mohammed, Obinna Aguocha, Amaobi Ogah, Ibe Okwara, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Benedict Etanabene, Emmanuel Emeruwa, Lawson Osagie, Imaobong Ufot, among others.

While inaugurating the committee, National Chairman Nenadi Usman urged members to carry out their duties with diligence, fairness, and dedication. She also encouraged them to use the extra time to ensure proper planning for hitch-free congresses and convention.

“The party appeals to its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and its teeming supporters nationwide for their understanding regarding this adjustment. It assured that a new timetable will be communicated in due course.”
