The Zamfara State Government has directed security and law enforcement agencies to intensify enforcement against traffic offenders across the state, as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce accidents.
The directive was issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, while receiving a report on traffic violations and related offences in Gusau.
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Suleman Tudu, the action follows the establishment of a committee in February tasked with examining the prevalence of traffic violations and recommending measures to address the rising number of road accidents.
The committee, chaired by Salisu Bello Fago, was mandated to assess the nature of traffic-related offences and propose strategies to strengthen compliance with road safety regulations.
Addressing members of the committee, Nakwada expressed concern over the reckless behaviour of some road users, describing it as a serious threat to public safety.
He directed law enforcement agencies to identify, track, and prosecute offenders without fear or favour, regardless of their status, while also warning officials against engaging in extortion.
The SSG further instructed relevant agencies to step up public awareness campaigns and urged residents to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations.
He commended the committee for its work and assured that the government would carefully review its recommendations with a view to improving traffic management and ensuring safer roads.
One of the key recommendations includes the establishment of a joint task force comprising personnel from various security and law enforcement agencies to support the Zamfara Road Traffic Court.
Meanwhile, the Road Traffic Court has already recorded significant enforcement activity, convicting about 270 traffic offenders across the state within the past week.
