US Lawmaker Urges Nigeria to Decentralise Police

United States lawmaker, Rep. Riley M. Moore, has called on the Nigerian government to decentralise the Nigeria Police Force as part of efforts to curb insecurity and protect citizens.

Moore made the remark in a post on his official X handle while reacting to the recent attack on St. James Catholic Church in Adu, Taraba State, where suspected Fulani herdsmen reportedly burned down the building.

In his reaction, the U.S. senator urged Nigerian authorities to take decisive steps to safeguard lives, particularly in regions affected by recurring violence.

He wrote, “Christians in Nigeria continue to face brutal violence and death at the hands of radical Islamic terrorists.

“The government in Abuja must step up and protect their citizens in the Middle Belt.

It’s past time to decentralize police authorities so state governments can protect their citizens and stop this horrific persecution”.

Moore’s comments add to ongoing debates around policing structure in Nigeria, with some stakeholders advocating for state policing as a way to improve security response at the local level.
