The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has explained why he did not attend the national summit of opposition parties held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Sowore said Nigeria requires genuine political alternatives rather than “recycled failures,” distancing himself and his party from the gathering.
The summit brought together prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governors Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi, as well as former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Senate President David Mark.
Despite the high-profile attendance, Sowore remained absent and was critical of those present, describing them as individuals who “held Nigeria to ransom for years, presiding over stagnation, corruption, and systemic decay”.
He stated that the AAC “will not be part of any charade designed to recycle failed political actors under the guise of “opposition”.
According to him, his party is focused on building a different kind of political movement.
“Instead, we are committed to presenting a formidable, people-driven alternative, one rooted in integrity, accountability, and genuine transformation.
“We will mobilize Nigerians across the country to rally behind a credible vision that rejects the decadence and deception represented by both the @OfficialAPCNg and their opportunistic counterparts in ADC, PDP, Labour Party and elsewhere
“Nigeria does not need a rearrangement of the same broken pieces, it needs a complete break from the past,” he added.
