Police Disband Tactical Teams in Rivers

The Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State has announced the dissolution of its tactical teams as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, accountability, and professionalism.

The decision was communicated by the command’s spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, during a briefing with journalists in Port Harcourt. She indicated that the move was implemented in line with a directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

Agabe explained that the disbanded tactical units have been consolidated into a newly established formation known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). The unit is expected to serve as a centralised response team for addressing incidents involving violent crime within the state.

“The VCRU is mandated to respond swiftly and decisively to incidents of violent crime, while adhering to established rules of engagement and respect for fundamental human rights,” she said.

The restructuring initiative, according to the command, is designed to improve coordination among operational units and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement activities.

In addition, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, issued a warning to officers regarding professional conduct. He cautioned against practices such as extortion, abuse of authority, and other forms of misconduct.

“Any violation of the Nigeria Police Force Code of Conduct will attract disciplinary action,” Adepoju said.

The commissioner further reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities and instances of misconduct.

He reiterated the command’s resolve to promote policing that is effective, accountable, and responsive to the needs of the community.
