NELFUND Debunks Viral Claim of Student Loan Suspension

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has moved to clear the air following the circulation of a notice suggesting that it had halted its student loan disbursement programme.

In a statement released on its official X account on Saturday, the agency firmly denied the claim, describing the document as false and misleading. It emphasised that there has been no announcement regarding any suspension of loan disbursements.

The viral notice had stated that “due to unforeseen operational circumstances… NELFUND has taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause the student loan disbursement programme with immediate effect.” The message quickly spread across online platforms, raising concerns among students and stakeholders.

NELFUND, however, dismissed the claim without ambiguity, stating, “This document is fake. Kindly disregard the circulating letter on suspension of student loan disbursements. NELFUND has not issued any such directive.”

The agency urged the public to remain cautious and to seek updates only from its verified communication channels, noting the increasing spread of misinformation online.

This clarification comes at a time when the student loan scheme continues to draw significant attention nationwide.

According to government figures, the initiative has already supported over one million students, helping to expand access to higher education.

The broader intervention has also extended beyond financial aid, with more than 160,000 young people reportedly benefiting from digital skills training programmes linked to the scheme. In total, the Federal Government estimates that over N1.1bn has been invested in these efforts.
