The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged Lagos residents to take preventive steps against flooding as the rainy season intensifies.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Head of Lagos Operations, Mr Mohammed Olatunde, said the warning aligns with the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which lists Lagos as a high-risk state.
“The outlook identified thousands of communities nationwide as vulnerable and urged early preparedness to reduce losses,” he said.
Olatunde linked recurring floods to human factors such as blocked drains, poor waste disposal, and construction on natural waterways. He advised residents to keep drainage systems clear and avoid dumping refuse in canals.
He also encouraged those in flood-prone areas to relocate where possible, while urging communities to raise awareness and comply with environmental regulations.
“Prevention is far cheaper and better than cure,” he added.
