Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has arrived in Kano State for a closed-door meeting with Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), following an earlier visit to Bauchi State.
In Bauchi, Makinde held a private meeting with Governor Bala Mohammed and Senator Seriake Dickson, where discussions reportedly centred on political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Makinde dismissed claims that his camp had aligned with the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) associated with Nyesom Wike.
“I came to the public domain to say that I was in a meeting with Wike and President Tinubu, and Wike promised to hold PDP for the president towards 2027,” Makinde said. “Anyone with Wike’s group is supporting President Tinubu in 2027. We leave it for Nigerians to judge. We are not begrudging them for supporting President Tinubu, but go to them if you want to support them. They have the Federal Government, the judiciary, and INEC behind them, but we have the people behind us.”
Makinde was accompanied by Senator Seriake Dickson, who recently defected from the PDP to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
While the purpose of his visit to Kano has not been officially stated, sources indicate that the meeting with Kwankwaso may be part of ongoing consultations on possible alliances and strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.
