The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has announced new measures aimed at addressing the rising number of accidents involving dispatch riders on major roads across Lagos State.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, the agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, revealed that the authority is strengthening both enforcement and engagement strategies to improve compliance with traffic rules.
According to him, one of the key steps being taken is the establishment of direct communication with unions representing dispatch riders, as part of a broader safety campaign.
“There are plans to convene a stakeholders’ engagement with courier service operators and riders to promote strict adherence to safety regulations.
“The engagement will focus on encouraging riders to prioritise not only the safety of other road users, but also their personal wellbeing,” he said.
Bakare-Oki emphasised that the Lagos State Government remains committed to protecting lives and property through enhanced road safety measures. He noted that the planned stakeholder forum would bring together unions, logistics companies, and other relevant players to address persistent safety challenges and reinforce compliance with traffic laws.
In addition to enforcement, the agency is also focusing on long-term behavioural change through education. Bakare-Oki highlighted LASTMA’s school outreach programme, which aims to instil road safety awareness among young people.
He explained that the initiative is designed to shape responsible attitudes early, aligning with the agency’s mandate to promote safer road use across the state.
According to him, the programme has already made significant progress, reaching between 38 and 39 per cent of schools in Lagos State between January and March.
