Ibom Air Opens Accra–Uyo International Route

Governor Umo Eno has announced the introduction of a new international flight route connecting Accra to Uyo, describing the development as a significant milestone in advancing economic growth and strengthening regional ties.

The announcement came after the governor returned from the inaugural flight, which he said represents a major step toward positioning Uyo as a strategic hub for business, tourism, and cross-border engagement within West Africa.

According to him, the new route is expected to stimulate economic activities by boosting tourism, facilitating trade, and attracting investment into the state, while also improving connectivity with neighbouring countries.

“This will open up more opportunities in tourism, trade, and investment, and make it easier for us to connect with other countries within the sub-region,” he said.

In addition to the new route, Eno revealed that the state government is taking further steps to strengthen its aviation sector. Central to these efforts is the establishment of a standalone Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development, aimed at providing focused oversight for infrastructure and operational growth.

“To give this sector greater focus, I have directed the creation of a standalone Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development,” he stated.

He also disclosed that Uwem Ekanem has been appointed to oversee the ministry on an interim basis pending the appointment of a substantive commissioner.

The governor further highlighted plans to expand the operations of the state-owned airline, Ibom Air, noting that a new aircraft will soon be added to its fleet.

“Ibom Air will also receive a new Airbus A220 in June as we continue to expand our fleet and strengthen our aviation capacity,” he said.

Eno acknowledged the role of the Federal Government in supporting the initiative, including contributions from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, as well as the efforts of previous administrations.

The launch of the Accra–Uyo route is expected to enhance Akwa Ibom State’s position as a growing destination for commerce, tourism, and international collaboration within the West African sub-region.
